Who is Eligible for Various SASSA Grants?

Although each grant has a different eligibility criteria, most of them have a few similarities, such as being a citizen or resident of South Africa and living in South Africa.

SASSA Eligibility

Aside from the residency requirements, people must satisfy financial requirements as well. Each grant can have a different annual income threshold. It means that if a person exceeds the set income threshold, they will not qualify for the SASSA grant.

Some grants also have a set threshold for the value of assets. If the value of the assets of a person goes over the set threshold, they will become ineligible to receive the grant.

Even if a person satisfies all the requirements initially, they need to maintain eligibility for the SASSA grants. For example, a person applied for the SRD grant and was approved. However, a couple of months later, the person’s income increased and exceeded the set threshold amount. Therefore, this person won’t be able to receive the monthly payment unless they meet the eligibility for the SASSA SRD grant again.

Please note that the eligibility criteria for various types of Social grants administered by the SASSA keep undergoing changes to reflect the changes in the country’s economic situation. Therefore, people should regularly check the updates regarding the grant eligibility published by the South African government.
