Understanding SSS Unemployment Benefit

The SSS Unemployment Benefits Program provides financial assistance to employees who have been forcibly separated from their occupations. It is sometimes referred to as Involuntary Separation Benefit or Unemployment Insurance. Both Filipino workers overseas and those working at home are eligible for this assistance, both on land and at sea.

In addition to the current SSS benefits—which include benefits for illness, pregnancy, retirement, disability, death, and funerals—the aforementioned benefit is a recent addition. The SSS unemployment compensation is only available once per three (3) years, so keep that in mind.

There is no repayment required for this benefit because it is not a loan. This benefit is the most recent one provided by the Social Security System (SSS), which also offers retirement, health, disability, burial, and death benefits.

How to Apply?

To file an online application for benefits, members must log into their My. SSS account, choose E-Services, and then “Apply for unemployment benefit claim.” All you need is a laptop, smartphone, or other internet-connected device to use this SSS online resource.

  • Go to member.sss.gov.ph, the Member Portal, and select Register from the menu underneath the SSS Member Login.
  • This will direct you to the website where you may register for an online member user ID, which has eight alternatives. Select one item from the list indicating that you have already registered with SSS.
  • After that, a form with multiple choice questions will appear. Ensure that no mandatory field on the SSS registration form is left blank or is filled out erroneously.
  • Once your online membership application has been submitted, the SSS will check your information against its database.
  • Click the link to activate your My.SSS account after receiving the email from the SSS.
  • This will take you to a screen where you have to set up a password and then enter it again to verify it.

By using the My.SSS Portal, the SSS encourages all members to finish their online SSS registration. With the use of your UMID or cellphone number, you may easily finish the SSS registration process online.

SSS Unemployment Benefit Requirements

If the following requirements are satisfied, workers who were involuntarily separated beginning on March 5, 2019, would receive this monetary benefit:

  • The member has made at least thirty-six (36) months’ worth of donations; the member is not older than sixty (60) years.
  • The member was involuntarily separated from employment;
  • The member has not received unemployment benefits from the SSS within three (3) years of the date of the involuntary separation of employment; and
  • Twelve (12) months of which should have been in the eighteen (18) months immediately preceding the involuntary unemployment.

Involuntary unemployment indicates that the member’s employment was terminated due to circumstances beyond his control, such as approved reasons (redundancy,  retrenchment, installation of labor-saving devices, company closure, etc.), natural disasters, recessions, and similar events.

If the involuntary separation is the result of an employee’s fault, SSS should only recognize the certificate of separation from employment. However, let’s say that an employee leaves the company because they were subjected to abuse, mental torment, or other violations of the Philippine Labor Code, then they will be eligible.

SSS Unemployment Benefit Amount Check

If you are accepted into the program, you will receive, up to a maximum of two months, cash that is comparable to 50% of your average monthly salary credits (AMSC). For instance, if your AMSC is valued at PHP 18,000, you will be paid PHP 18,000 or PHP 9,000 every two months as a cash benefit.

A member will earn PHP 5,000 per month if they are unemployed and will be covered for a maximum of two months. As a result, a member may get a maximum of PHP 10,000 in unemployment benefits.
