SASSA Payment Increase

Numerous people in South Africa rely on the payments issued by the SASSA. SASSA issues various payments to qualified individuals in South Africa as monthly payments.

An increase in these SASSA grants significantly increases what individuals can receive as monthly payments. Recently, SASSA has announced that it will be increasing some of the grants for the upcoming year, i.e., 2024.

How Much SASSA Payment is Expected to Increase in 2024?

Currently, the following grants are provided by SASSA to eligible individuals – Older person’ grant, War Veteran’s Grant, Disability Grant, Grant in Aid, and Foster Child Grant, Covid Relief Grant, etc.

SASSA Payment Increase

Furthermore, SASSA also announced that the Covid Relief Grants will be extended until March 2025. It means that people who are currently receiving the Covid Relief Grants will be able to get these payments till March 2025, provided they meet the eligibility requirements for each payment month.

The total percentage by which the grants will be increased is mentioned on the SASSA’s and South African Government’s authorized websites. In February, the SASSA announced that the Child Support Grant will become R505 from R480. Later, SASSA announced that the Child Support Payment will now become R510.

However, the R350 Grant is likely to remain the same in 2024. Currently, the Grant in Aid is also set at a rate of R510 per month. Each grant will only be issued if the applications are approved, and the beneficiaries keep meeting the eligibility each month.

SASSA Payments

The monthly payments of SASSA grants vary from each other. Each grant has been introduced to fulfil a specific purpose, and each of these grants has different eligibility requirements.

Older Person’s Grant:

  • It is a payment that is given to citizens who are aged 60 and older.
  • The current payment rate of the Older Person’s Grant is R2090 per month.
  • If the person is older than 75 years, they will get R2110 per month.
  • The financial requirement of this grant states that the person shouldn’t earn more than R86280 (Single) or R172 560 (Married).

Grant in aid:

  • If a person receives a Social Grant but cannot look after themselves, they can apply for an additional grant. This additional grant will be used to make payments to the person who looks after them.
  • The maximum amount of the Grant in Aid is R510 per month.
  • To qualify, a person must be getting a disability grant, an older person’s grant or a war veteran’s grant.

Child support grant:

  • It is provided to help people who require financial assistance to raise a child.
  • To be eligible for the grant, the recipient child must be younger than 18 years of age.
  • The maximum amount of this grant is R51/month (per child).

War veteran’s grant:

  • This is for former soldiers who fought in the Korean War or the 2nd World War who cannot support themselves.
  • The maximum payment through this grant is R2110 per month.
  • One of the eligibility requirements to receive this grant is either to be aged 60 or more or to be disabled.

Social Relief of Distress:

  • It is a temporary assistance provided to the people who are in the most need of financial assistance to meet their basic needs.
  • The current monthly payment through this grant is R350.
  • People can apply for the SRD if they cannot meet the eligibility for the other grants administered by the SASSA.

Care dependency grant:

  • This grant is paid to take care of a child having a severe disability who requires special and full-time care.
  • This can be provided from the time the child is born till they reach the age of 18.
  • The child, as well as the person caring for the child, must be living in South Africa.
  • The payment through this significant grant is R2090 per month.
  • The grant will last when the child dies, turns 18, goes away from the country, or is admitted to a state institution. It can also be lapsed in case the caregiver doesn’t claim the grant for 3 successive months.
